Luxor was called the ancient city of Thebes, the grand capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom. The city had been home to several groups of people, such as the Babylonians, the Mitanni, the Hittites of Anatolia, the Canaanites of Ugarit, and the Minoans from the Island of Crete. Today, Luxor is a city of some 150,000 people and is governed by special statutes that allow it to be more autonomous than other political areas of Egypt. There is currently a tourism development plan for the city that aims to unearth and restore the 2.7km-long avenue of Sphinxes that once linked the Luxor and Karnak temples.
